Laura Moffatt MP has taken the decision that she no longer wishes to stand as The Labour Party candidate for Crawley at the forthcoming General Election.

Laura said “I have given a great deal of thought to this decision. It has been an honour and a privilege to represent the people of Crawley, but I feel the time has come for The Labour Party to seek a new candidate”.

“The work of an MP is challenging and exciting but it takes it's toll on family life which is why I have taken this difficult decision.”

“I remain firmly committed to fighting for Labour to win the upcoming General Election and am confident that, as they take a second look at Labour and a long hard look at the Conservatives, the British public will choose a future fair for all and a new Labour government.”

A Labour Party spokesperson said, “The NEC will now be putting in place procedures to select a candidate for the general election.”

The budget and what it means to Crawley
On Monday I spoke, probably for the last time in the House of Commons, about the need to ensure the budget works for improved innovation and infrastructure. It reminded me of the huge strides forward that have been made over the past 13 years but also of the challenges that lie ahead. This is an area in which we as a country simply have to compete if we are to flourish in a modern, dynamic global economy. Here in Crawley we are lucky to have companies like Ceres Power who are investing in new technology which will help make our...

Laura Moffatt challenges Henry Smith on Ashcroft
03 March 2010 In keeping with recent years Laura has taken the decision to once again donate her pay rise to charity. She also did this last year and felt that it was right to keep this ongoing commitment. This in contrast to the behaviour of the Leader of West Sussex County Council, her political opponent Henry Smith who in his time as Leader has presided over a 62% increase in his own personal allowances in the face of much lower independent recommendations Laura said “With it being such a difficult time for so many people and with so many...

Community payback
This week I had the pleasure to attend an event in Crawley which talked about community payback, a scheme which directs offenders to repay the community for their wrongdoing. I have seen for myself the excellent work that has been done as a result of this scheme. It was so nice to see the scheme being recognised. There was a time when community service was something that people constantly managed to get out of doing. Now under the name community payback the rules are much more tough with a strict no more than two no shows policy. This means that...

Help for people facing repossession
26 February 2010 The recent economic climate has put a massive strain on housing and has sadly led to some people losing their homes. Without doubt this has to be one of the worst effects of a recession. There can few things more stressful for a family than losing their home. For most of us we will be lucky enough not to have had to go through this but unfortunately there are those all round the country, including here in Crawley who have not been so lucky. The Government Mortgage Rescue Scheme was set up as a result of the...
